Cooling System Service & Repair

Coolant System Service

Your vehicles cooling system is vital to it operating properly. Excessive heat if not properly controlled will always cause damage and that is the last thing you want to do to your car’s engine. Coolant quality has definitely improved over the years but the demands on it have increased which means it needs regular service and maintenance. Every vehicle requires a specific type of coolant. At Okapro we use products that meet and/or exceed the factory recommendations so you can be sure you are getting a quality product. We perform a coolant system flush service where we remove the old coolant and replace it with new coolant while the vehicle is running. This requires a special tool but it is by far the most effective way of servicing your vehicles cooling system.

Your vehicle warms up and cools down constantly. Every time you drive it it builds up heat and then cools causing the metals to expand and contract. Most new engines are aluminum and depending on the alloys added can expand and contract at different rates. The coolant is supposed to operate in those conditions without leaking past the gaskets while everything is shifting. Your coolant level plays a large part in having heat inside your vehicle for when it’s cold outside as well as allowing your air conditioning system to work effectively keeping you cool in the summer months. It maintains proper temperature throughout your entire engine so that it operates efficiently allowing you to get better fuel mileage and increasing longevity of other key components. Therefore, it is important to maintain proper coolant levels in your vehicle. Here in Kelowna because we are seasonal and we see hot and cold temperatures throughout the year, it is important to have your cooling system operating properly and at Okapro Automotive we can help with that.

Coolant Flush

A standard cooling system flush or fluid change is recommended every 50 000km or every 2-3 years. Standard coolant is your basic ethylene glycol or universal coolant. This coolant is a 50/50 mix with water and it is very common among manufacturers. At Okapro we can test your coolant’s glycol strength and acidic value. This helps determine whether a flush is “needed”. On the other hand the maintenance schedule set by the manufacturer for your vehicle is preventative and can help in avoiding larger costly failures down the road.
